Rollin' Like Sisyphus

Racism, Straight Up

Now entering the burning times.

Now entering the burning times.

So the decrepit owner of one of my local sports franchises was illegally taped rambling on about how he disliked the idea of his arm-candy girlfriend splashing pictures of herself with other men on the social networks, which has whipped up the chattering class to the point of, as former Lakers and UCLA legend Lew Alcindor Kareem Abdul-Jabbar described “peeing themselves with glee.”
That this glee is really only about having something to talk about is a point for another day. But for those keeping score at home, it is now perfectly reasonable and beyond question that a man may have his livelihood plundered for the offense of holding an opinion in private, that maybe his kept woman not cuckold him so publically and egregiously with the pre-eminent Lakers icon on the sidelines of his Clippers games; a team, it bears noting, that has played second fiddle to the Lakers in this city for decades, and a team that has just started to gain some traction in market in the past few months.
Private conversation –> asks girlfriend not to embarrass him at his own games with Mr. Laker –> asks girlfriend not to broadcast that embarrassment to the world on Instatwat –> is recorded and led by girlfriend to rant against black people in general, though still a private conversation –> TAKE EVERYTHING HE HAS! HEAP THE ASHES! DON THE SACKCLOTH! FIND A RAIL!
It’s not that he’s racist, it’s that he’s said the unsayable – anything about black people. If he’d insisted his girlfriend stopped hanging with Luke Walton on the sidelines, then ranted about the goddamn crackers for 10 minutes, no one says a single thing about it. The only other groups that would have elicited this much ire at the moment are gays and Mexicans, and maybe not even the Mexicans.
The big takeaway here is that all of this OUTRAGOUS OUTRAGE didn’t spark in the aftermath of any of the other, much more public displays of “racism, straight up” that the Clippers owner has committed, including in court depositions. Yet now it’s the end of the world.
Why?
The panic that I’ve been speaking of recently.
This is the perfect example of it in action. Intense outbursts offered by those at the end of their ropes leads to intense and immediate over-reaction at any hint of deviation from the script. Five years ago, worse transgressions committed to the public record barely registered, and still qualified the man for an NAACP award. Today, under the same general social norms, a much less damning opinion offered in a private conversation demands that the man prostrate himself upon the cleansing fires of social conflagration.
The only thing that’s changed in the interim is five more years closer to the precipice.
Don’t look down.
