History Would Be Great If You Didn’t Have To Live There

Constituencies...

Constituencies…

There is inevitably going to be some negative reaction, and it’ll make for good TV.

So the verdict came in and the dignified existential angst came out all over a St. Louis suburb. Frustrated that the stores had “nothing good to loot” the cohort of the legitimately aggrieved race heroes of our time decided to burn the whole damn thing to the ground because justice demanded it, obviously.
I don’t really have much to say beyond the simple observation that someone somewhere in a position of influence wanted, as Our Simple Affirmative Action President put it, “good TV” and so the announcement of the grand jury’s decision came in the hours just after twilight, when burning objects look their best in high definition, and a good time was had by all with the National Guard 50 miles away with all of their weapons safely stowed out of reach.
Not that the troops would have done anything had they been standing right there, but still, that the decision to not let white folks feel safe with boots on the ground was also a concerted effort at some kind of effect that would look great on television.
My only other comment of note is this:
Fuck the protesters who clearly cannot disassociate themselves from their baser tribal instincts and also fuck the police because rolling around in APCs with drones on overwatch breeds nothing but contempt and animosity from everyone else.

So anyway, I’m reading Shelby Steele’s awesome White Guilt and thought about combining a few of his observations into why I think Ferguson will prove to be the end of the Civil Rights movement. But then I thought, fuck it. I’ll just read Huck. I got nothing to add.

I love the title. Still, I think you miss the depth of it. Kings, for all the history of man, didn’t live as well as we do. Of course, the only reason we do live that well is that, for a while, we didn’t have a king or any who tried to be one.

As to uparmored police with drones? I think the riots prove “why”, rather than pissing me off. However, if they aren’t going to be used when they should be, that makes me want to cut that funding. Just tell citizens who can legally do so to arm up and keep the wrong ones out. And then let them. Still, when it’s your neighborhood being threatened, if you want the cops to step down and go away, and ask them to do so, then I’ll bite. Until then it sounds like typical macho college dude populism.
